Man killed as fistfight leads to gunfire at S. Loop club

A fistfight on the dance floor of a South Loop nightclub turned deadly early Sunday when a man pulled out a handgun and killed a 24-year-old patron.
Marcus Johnson, of the 4100 block of West Grenshaw, was pronounced dead at Northwestern Memorial Hospital after the shots rang out about 1:40 a.m. at the Chicago Legend Restaurant & Lounge, 2109 S. Wabash, authorities said.
The shooter, who police said was wearing a black fur coat, got out of the building and was being sought later Sunday. One witness told police the man fired four or five rounds and hit Johnson at least four times.
The incident began with words being exchanged on the dance floor and escalated into a large fight among several patrons. People escaped the club through its front windows, most of which were boarded up Sunday afternoon. Attempts to reach the club's owners for comment were unsuccessful.
Despite its similar name, Chicago Legend is not affiliated with the better-known Buddy Guy's Legends club, which also is in the South Loop on Wabash.
Johnson's death comes a little more than a year after a similar shooting at a Near North Side club. Three people were killed and four others injured in that incident at Cafe Allure, 1501 N. Dayton. In February 2005, another man was killed in a shooting outside the Door 21 nightclub, 151 W. Ohio.
