The Mix Masters April 7, 2006 Julius the Mad Thinker's influence as a DJ has gone international. Julius the Mad Thinker "I used to go out dancing and I'd disagree with what the DJs were playing, so I started messing with DJ-ing and I just loved it," says this Elgin native, whose love of house music helped him co-build a global party scene known as 3 Degrees Global. "There were seven us and we wanted to build a community, so we started throwing a party where the goal was to have everyone there know everyone else by three people [in degrees of separation]." The idea started in Chicago in 1999 and took off. "We quickly realized it was a small world," Julius says. "People would tell us, 'Oh, man, I haven't seen him since high school!'" Soon the idea spread to San Francisco, Washington, D.C., and Detroit. The group also holds events in New York, Los Angeles, London, Montreal and Toronto. Now, claiming some 10,000 members worldwide, 3 Degrees is starting to sell music. This spring, Julius will release his second compilation, "Some Call It House We Call It Home '06." Julius also does production work with a team called Aid to the Soulless with co-creators Emmaculate and FLX. "When Julius DJs, he loses himself in the music and people feel that energy," Emmaculate says. "When a DJ is really hot, their energy carries into the crowd, and that's what it's like with Julius." Wet, 209 W. Lake, (312) 223-9232; 10 p.m. Wednesdays. No cover. By RSVP or membership only (21-over). To RSVP, visit: www.3degreesglobal.com/thisweek/chi_week.htm.
