Cowboys coach claims family found dead rat in McDonald's salad
October 26, 2006
Associated Press
DALLAS -- Dallas Cowboys assistant coach Todd Haley is suing a suburban McDonald's, claiming his wife and the family's live-in baby sitter found a dead rat in a salad they took home and began to eat.
The lawsuit filed Thursday in state district court seeks $1.7 million in damages, The Dallas Morning News reported on its Web site.
In addition to Haley, the Cowboys' passing game coordinator who got in a well-publicized shouting match with receiver Terrell Owens earlier this month, the suit was also filed on behalf of his wife Christine and the family's au pair, Kathryn Kelley.
A message left for McDonald's Corp. spokesman Walt Riker on Thursday evening was not immediately returned.
According to the lawsuit, Christine Haley and Kelley had eaten part of the salad purchased June 5 at a McDonald's in Southlake before the rat was discovered. The women became violently ill and endured long-lasting physical injuries, the lawsuit said.
Believed to be a juvenile roof rat, the rodent was about 6 inches long and was found on its back with its mouth opened, Scott Casterline, a spokesman for the family, told The Associated Press.
He said the women didn't find it until taking the salad home to eat, and that a manager from the McDonald's "didn't offer any comfort" after driving to their house to investigate. The suit was filed after the restaurant didn't follow through on promises "to make things right," he said.
"The family needs closure," said Casterline, whose family's law firm is representing the plaintiffs. "It came to a point where you have to draw a line."
Ken Lobato, owner-operator of the McDonald's in Southlake, told the Morning News that he hadn't seen the suit and couldn't respond.
"Nothing is more important to us than the safety and well-being of our customers," he said. "We maintain the strictest quality standards. We take these matters seriously and are conducting a full investigation to get all the facts.
"In my years as an owner-operator, I've never seen anything like this."
In the Cowboys' loss to Philadelphia on Oct. 8, Owens was seen screaming at Haley on the sidelines. Owens later said his relationship with Haley was ruined, but then said after his three-touchdown game against the Texans on Oct. 15 that there was mutual respect between the two.

Be sure to cast your vote in our latest poll on CHR. We are now creating a new seasonal ratings system on Chicago House Radio to inform the audience about the music we play, the dee jays involved and the radio shows that they produce. Your vote is essential, as it will play a major role in developing a music rotation that suits the audience. Listed are some examples of the music CHR play. This is the bulk of our daily rotation. This means that when you tune into CHR, you will hear one of the following genres. I personally like them all. Some songs I like more than others. I can listen to Bad Boy Bill one minute and then Sadar Bahar the next. But that's just my taste. Place your vote and let us know your favorites. Later we will cover other essentials for the ratings such as your total listening hours, which CHR shows are your favorites and which dee jays you would prefer hearing more often. It is our aim to have the ratings available to the public for the Fall of 2006. Thanks for your support of Chicago House Radio! Please note that this poll was developed on yahoo e groups for our yahoo members only. You can reply to this thread with your comments and suggestions.Lloyd Dev > Enter your vote today! NEW YORK (AP) -- Rappers have long proclaimed their love for Cristal, frequently mentioning the high-end champagne in songs and popping the corks of the clear, gold-labeled bottles in music videos and at nightclubs.
But the makers of Cristal don't seem to feel the same way about hip-hop -- at least that's how one rapper-turned-record executive sees it.
Multi-platinum rapper Jay-Z, now president and chief executive officer of Def Jam Records, has decided to boycott his once-beloved bubbly over comments from the managing director of the company that produces it.
In a special summer issue of The Economist magazine, Frederic Rouzaud, managing director of Louis Roederer, said the company viewed the affection for his company's champagne from rappers and their fans with "curiosity and serenity."
Asked by the magazine if the association between Cristal and the "bling lifestyle" could be detrimental, Rouzaud replied:
"That's a good question, but what can we do? We can't forbid people from buying it. I'm sure Dom Perignon or Krug would be delighted to have their business."
The comments left a bad taste in Jay-Z's mouth. The rapper said he would pull Cristal from his small chain of popular sports lounges -- where bottles of Cristal sell for $450 (€357) and $600 (€476) -- as well as from his personal flutes.
"It has come to my attention that the managing director of Cristal, Frederic Rouzaud views the 'hip-hop' culture as 'unwelcome attention,"' Jay-Z said in a statement released Wednesday. "I view his comments as racist and will no longer support any of his products through any of my various brands including The 40/40 Club nor in my personal life."
Jay-Z plans to replace Cristal -- which a club spokesman said it could never stock enough of -- with Krug and Dom Perignon at the Manhattan and Atlantic City locations of his 40/40 Club. (There are plans for clubs in Las Vegas, Los Angeles, Tokyo, Singapore, and Hong Kong, according to the club's Web site.)
Rouzaud did not return a message seeking comment. But it was the writer of the article, and not Rouzaud, who used the phrase "unwelcome attention." After Rouzaud's comments about Dom Perignon and Krug, scribe Gideon Rachman wrote: "Both Dom Perignon and Krug have had their share of unwelcome attention, too."
Still, Jay-Z spokesman Ron Berkowitz said his client remains offended.
"They're trying to distance themselves from the hip-hop community," Berkowitz said. "The hip-hop world certainly helped elevate the presence of Cristal. At the end of the day isn't the goal for any company to sell bottles?"
Cristal, which Roederer considers its "jewel," began appearing on the lips of many hip-hop devotees following an onslaught of mentions in rap songs as early as the 1990s.
Jay-Z's adoration goes back to at least 1996, when he rhymed on the song "Can't Knock the Hustle": "My motto, stack rocks like Colorado/Auto off the champagne, Cristal's by the bottle."
Others with a fondness for Cristal include Sean Combs, Kanye West, and Trina.
According to Agenda Inc., a brand strategy agency that tracks mentions in Billboard's top 20 songs, Cristal ranked number eight in 2005, behind other brands such as Mercedes, Nike, Bentley and Rolls Royce.
Louis Roederer was founded in 1776 and is still family-owned, according to its Web site. Cristal was created in 1876 exclusively for Tsar Alexander II. Roederer stopped making the champagne after 1917 but started again in the 1940s.
Boycotts aren't new to hip-hop. In 2003, Pepsi agreed to give $3 million (€2.38 million) to charity after Def Jam co-founder Russell Simmons threatened a boycott because the soda company canceled an endorsement deal with rapper Ludacris in the wake of complaints from commentator Bill O'Reilly.

Do you have some of those old mixes from back in the day? Well CHR is looking for those old, classic and vintage mixes from the early days of Chicago radio. In keeping with the tradition, we are looking for those rare tapes from WBMX, WGCI, WKKC, WNUR and more. Here is a list of some of those hot items we are looking for:
Armando Gallop - guest dee jay on WBMX around 1988
Pharris Thomas - during his days at WBMX
Walter 'Get Down' Brown 125 record speed mix
Frankie Knuckles from WBMX
Lloyd Devestating Jackmaster & Lil' John - guest mix on WGCI, May 1991
Martin "Boogieman" Luna from WGCI
and whatever else that you may have. If the tapes are in fare quality with at least 25 minutes or better, contact Lloyd Dev via e mail: lloyddev@chicagohouseradio.com

This is the last day of the conference for me. Sunday went the same as the other days. I had to get up early in the morning preparing to go to a party that started at 12 noon. Quite unusual for someone who comes from a city that is known for it's night life. The DHP Party didn't start until around 2pm, with me still being the opening act. That went well because it gave me time to find some eats and to venture off to some other parties afterwards. This time there where no turntables (1200's) which I'm more accustomed to spinning with. I had to do an all cd set which I wasn't prepared for. Now I have alot of joints on cd but I bump wax when I can. Next after me was Sammy Rock from cyberjamz.com. I lefted and took my carry crate back to the hotel. Me and John came across this wing joint on Washington and had to stop. They have 25 flavors to choose from and I damn sure picked one of them.
Later we went back to The DHP Party and heard a bit of Timmy Richardson and met up with Glenn Underground. After that it was off to the chicagosoundsource.com party. Lego was spinning with Lou-Lou and Mark Grant playing precussion. The party was jammed packed. I saw Czarina finally. Also in the house was Fast Eddie, XL and Dave Sabat with others. After that, we were off again to The 3 Degrees joint. We caught the whole 3 Degrees camp with CHR's own, Mona Dee along with FLX, Julius The Mad Thinker, Ed Dunn, Priti Ghandi, Cassandra, Freddie, Alex, Monna and many more. Eventually a stop by JMJ, Frank Cano, Alerick T., and a performance by Women on Wax's Diviniti (Find A Way - Danny Krevit's Mix) took us through the night. That ended at 9pm so off for more eats. Next stop was The Unified Records party, with the live performances by Carla Prather, Reggie Hall Mr. A.L.I. & Pevan Everett. This place was double-sided with events on both sides. Vic Lavender was on the box, killing them with Africanism and some other cuts. There I met up with DJ Pope, DJ Oji, Mark Grant, Sadar Bahar, Boo Williams, Jamie 3:26, Czarina, Jozana, Kenny Ray and many more too numerous to name.
Now it is check out time. Here's my thoughts on the conference:
1. More and more dee jays including myself are spinning more cd's than wax. Will records become obsolete? Has technology replaced and taking away from the art form or has it made it better?
2. The conference is a good reference tool for networking. I met more people involved in this music over the weekend than ever before. I can see how CHR can benefit from the experience and how our presence will be the next time.
3. I heard so much music and went to so many parties that at times I became bored and exhausted with it. Whenever there was I quiet point at a party, like a dee jay playing a boring record or turning the sounds down, I was ready to go. The energy has to say up to keep my interest. There were so many parties going on that I don't need to hear anymore music for days.
4. Most people were cool to met. They were welcoming and friendly. There were business cards and cd's exchanged, which helps because alot of times you don't have the time to sit back and socialize.
Feel free to add you comments and thoughts. If you went to the WMC tell us about your experience as well.

The party continues. It's like it never stops. Saturday afternoon was no different. I found myself at the King Street/Night Grooves party along with cyberjamz.com. On arrival I saw Stacy Kidd & finally DJ Pierre who was playing for King St. I stayed for a brief period because I had to find some eats. Jamie 3:26 was on for cyberjamz which was webcasting too.
They have this Gyro shop on 5th & Washington that have pita and gyro sandwiches that were different from the other spots in town. This area of Miami Beach was kind of Ritzy, with a bunch of upscale restaurants that are over-priced with mediocre service. I did manage to find Subway, McDonald's & Burger King on the way. Remember Archer Treachers? Well they have one here, with a Miami Sub included. Mmm, mmm good! It was a bit on the cool side and a brotha was partied out. I rested for a bit, only to go and party some more. I missed the panel at The Wydham with the DJ competition. I plan on making up for it today with the panel on 'Dance Music On The Radio'. You know I have a mouth full to say about that. Chicago radio isn't balanced out with the music. They don't play House music in rotation with Chris Brown and TI, not that I dislike them. As a result, we aren't familiar with the names of our favorite tunes like the hip hop heads are because it isn't played every hour on the hour like the other stuff. We can have "the station for hip hop and r&b" but not one for "House and Disco". Since The Hot Mix 5, Frankie Knuckles and others have lefted FM radio for the clubs and other places, they bullshit on our music. That's okay because we still support this music, rather it is on cd, the internet or in the club. It's us that find a way to keep it going.
By the end of the night I found myself walking through town with George Jackson, John Muhammad and DJ Chris. George and Chris checked out Josh Wink and Boris at this big afternoon party. They said it had to be people in the thousands at this event. I could only imagine. I have had my share of music since this trip anyway. On my way out the other day I heard this cat mixing and cutting up BBD's Poision in the club. I damn near wanted to pay the $20 dollars to hear him play, but I had to get going. Anyway we went to some back yard beach party that Tony Humphries was supposed to be playing. Some dee jay was beating Julien Jabre's 'Swimming Places' along with some other joints I was familiar with. No Tony. We lefted and went to The Shelbourne Hotel again. This time the list included Todd Terry, DJ Sneak, Armand Van Helden, Stretch Armstrong and others. We didn't have the hook up at this party, so we ventured on. We got the scoop on The Masters At Work party and headed that way. Collins ave., Washington ave., and Ocean Dr., looked like a longer version of Rush St. in Chicago with people everywhere. The people in Miami don't think nothing about saying something obscene to someone walking down the street when they are driving by in there cars. The traffic was not moving. Driving was out of the question. A bus or a cab wasn't an option. We were looking at a 16 block walk or so. Thre were car shows on the stip with wheels spinning. The women were dress to kill no matter how cool it was. After about block number 12 or so, me and John switched routes. We said the hell with The MAW party and went over to The 3 Degrees Party. We met up with the 3 Degrees camp, including Mona Dee, Ed Dunn, Freddie, Alex, Priti, FLX and Monna. I got mixes from them so stay tuned to CHR.
That's my day in a nut shell. On the close of this trip I will share with you my thoughts on WMC and to whole atmosphere. I'm getting ready to head over to The Deep House Page Party. After all, I'm the opening act. Holla!
To be continued...

I hadn't realized that the weekend just started. It started all over again on Friday morning when I finally got up. Me, John Muhammad, and Gold D headed over to The Clevlander for brunch and more music. Can you imagine going to a party at 11am in the morning? We met up with Mynia and Mona Dee and got things going. They had a party going on indoors and one going on the patio. We went with the latter. Talk about action. It was about 75 degrees already and people everywhere. This was a party sponsered by traxsource.com. The guest included Jamie Lewis and others who I never heard. Some guy that looks like Glenn Underground was up cuttin' up the pavement. He was getting his groove on. Everything on the menu including the appetitizers started at $7.95 on up. You know I had to have my Strong Island or two. Anyway the music was banging. I got the chance to met the whole crew from The UDM Show. It was a dead giveaway because they had their t-shirts on. Mark Stone, Armando Gomez and Valentino where here, all the way from Switzerland. By the way check there show out on CHR on Sundays at 9pm CST.
Later that evening after I re-grouped from that high ass tab from the Clevlander (clevlander.com), I headed over to The Ristorante di Bertuccio WMC Chicago Welcoming Party hosted by Motha Diva. The party got off to a late start because the New Jersey party was still going. I met their whole crew, including Jihad Muhammad, Pookie, DJ Les Cole and others. They brought a large support base with them including a dance crew that was pure raw. Them New Yorkers be getting it on the dancefloor! So after a heavy exchange of business cards and cd's, I finally got on the box. Motha Diva talked during the first part of my set. Just when I was getting ready to tell her to put a sock in it, the noise stopped. Usually going first means you are in the rookie spot or a peon paying his dues. Either way I wasn't mad because I wanted to check out some of the other parties. DJ Snooze came on next, then Steve 'Silk' Hurley. George Jackson didn't play because of the schedule. He still had a good time. The place was loaded with House celebrities. DJ Skip came in with Steve Hurley. Fast Eddie and DJ Jes was hanging at the bar with me with a cold Corona and a shot of Tequila. Mmm, mmm... good! Leornard Part Sixx, Greg Grey, K Big, Mynia, Mona Dee, John Muhammad, Gold D and a host of others were hanging. It was a pleasure to hear Steve Hurley play after all of these years.
Saturday is going to be hot too. We are getting ready this morning to go eat brunch and head over to the cyberjamz.com afternoon party. Jamie 3:26, DJ Pierre, Timmy Richardson and I believe Barry B and others will be playing at this set. The hotel is on Washington, real close to all of the events, so that helps out. I caught hell last night trying to roll my record bag around. It was windy and around 67 degrees. Like I should complain. Later tonight is the real deal going down at the mansion. Chicago is here holding it down with this off the hook event. Steve 'Silk' Hurley, Farley Jackmaster Funk, Jamie Principle and some others I didn't name will be in this big ass mansion. d**n. Life is good.
I'll tell you about the Sunday line-up with Jazzy Jeff, Todd Terry, Kenny 'Dope'Gonzolez, Terry Hunter and more later. I'm going to try to squeeze in the DJ Competition today over at The Wydham.
To be continued...

Nothing but pure excitement since we have arrived in Miami. When I left out of O'hare I found myself in the company of some many dee jays. One of them, my cyberjamz colleague, Mynia. I knew then it was going to be one hell of a plane ride. We had a layover in Washington DC. Thats just what it turned out to be. A two hour flight delay. We hit The Samuel Adams Brewhouse in the terminal. After a Strong Island or two, I was in good shape. We finally got in here around 9pm. Party time! I caught a glimpse of the Soulfuric Party. After that I linked up with George Jackson, Ron Carroll, Chris and others to head over to The Shelby Hotel to catch Frankie Knuckles and Shapeshifters. It had to be 750+ people or better. Talk about energy! The party was jumping. I think I had about 3 hours of sleep , but it is time for breakfast. John 'da party pooper' Muhammad and Gold D are finally up LOL. I had to leave them last night because they were wore out from the flight and the walk for some food. I ain't mad at yall! Mynia mentionned all of us hanging out for a liquid breakfast. I could just imagine what that means. Later today I'm hooking up with the rest of the crew from CHR. Czrina Marani is down here somewhere partying passing out the latest issue of 5 Magazine with Steve Hurley on the front . MonaDee is on her way in from DC. Glenn Underground, DJ Pierre, DJ Disciple and Larry Heard are here, so we will make the connection some time today. Also I saw some UDM Show flyers on the ground, which is a good thing because they are here promoting. The party with me, George Jackson, DJ Snooze and Outlandish hosted by Motha Diva is tonight. I hope they have 1200's (turntables) because I brought quite a few records. If all fails I have my cd's. It's House! Chat with ya later! To be continued...
